The H1N1 flu is a serious disease. While the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has reported decreasing visits to doctors and hospitalization rates for influenza-like illness throughout the country, we need to remain vigilant, as the influenza season is far from over. Similarly, surveillance of EMS Dispatch Data in Suffolk County continues to show no appreciable impact. Most flu activity occurs from January through March, and the flu season continues until May. Influenza is unpredictable and we do not know the likelihood of a future wave of H1N1 flu, but we do know that vaccination is the most important step in protecting against influenza. Protect yourself, your family and your community by getting vaccinated. H1N1 Influenza vaccine is becoming more and more available in Suffolk County. This time represents a window of opportunity for people to protect themselves against H1N1 influenza if they have not already received the H1N1 flu vaccine.

People highly recommended to receive H1N1 influenza vaccine (specified by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices) include pregnant women, household contacts and caregivers for children younger than 6 months of age, healthcare and emergency medical services personnel, all people from 6 months through 24 years of age, and persons aged 25 to 64 who have conditions associated with higher risk of medical complications from influenza.   For those still needing the vaccine, the Suffolk County Department of Health Services (SCDHS) is holding OPEN (no appointment needed) points of distribution (POD) clinics for H1N1 influenza vaccination for people in priority groups, including EMS Providers, for H1N1 influenza vaccination. The seasonal influenza vaccine will also be available (no appointment necessary) and will be free and for adults 18 years of age and older. Confirmation of our vaccination clinics can be found on our website at www.suffolkcountyny.gov/health

The public POD clinics are scheduled as follows:

·        Thursday, February 4, 2010 at the Shelter Island Senior Citizens Center, Rte. 114 South, Medical Building, Shelter Island, between 11 AM and 1 PM
