The Suffolk County Division of EMS remembers……..
Exactly seven years ago yesterday, the Suffolk County EMS community suffered a tragic loss as news travelled throughout the county that EMT Heidi Behr and EMT-Paramedic William Stone were tragically killed in a "Line of Duty Accident.”
Each staff member at the EMS Division is honored, simply having had the opportunity to know and work with Heidi and Bill. They were more than peers and students, they were our friends. They truly embodied the spirit of this year’s EMS week theme, which is befitting their legacy, which is - EMS: More than a Job. A Calling.
The EMS Division believes that their tragic deaths were not in vain. Over the last several years we have seen a positive change in our “EMS Culture of Safety” as a result of this tragedy. We now have much more emphasis in Suffolk County, and across NY State, on provider safety, including new educational curricula focusing on scene safety, new ambulance construction standards to protect occupants, and guidance for providing patient care by an unrestrained provider in a moving ambulance.
Rest in peace our friends
