On Monday, December 22, 2025, Stony Brook University Hospital EMS will implement a Prehospital Blood Transfusion Program and will now carry Packed Red Blood Cells (pRBCs) at each aviation base.
This resource is available for the treatment of patients with suspected or confirmed life-threatening hemorrhage in accordance with the New York State ALS Collaborative Protocols. EMS crews are encouraged to request this resource early when there is concern for significant or ongoing blood loss. At this time, this resource is available exclusively via aviation, and no Stony Brook University Hospital ground units will be carrying blood.
An educational video has been developed and can be viewed by clicking HERE.
An accompanying fact sheet is also HERE.
Questions related to the Prehospital Blood Transfusion program itself can be addressed directly by Stony Brook Hospital EMS.
